What Are Isocyanates?

Isocyanates, known as diisocyanates (TDI, MDI and HDI), are a group of chemicals that are widely used in occupational settings.

They are commonly used in the production of polyurethane-based foams, coatings and adhesives, spray painting/coating, in the automotive industry, and during work activities in mining industries.

Isocyanates are known to induce various health effects, including skin-and respiratory tract sensitisation resulting in allergic dermatitis, conjunctivitis and asthma. Breathing in isocyanate is one of the leading causes of occupational asthma in Australia.

What Are Phenols?

Phenol is used as a general disinfectant, as a reagent in chemical analysis and for the manufacture of artificial resins, medical and industrial organic compounds and dyes.

Industrial uses of phenol include the manufacture of paints and paint removers, the creation of fertilisers and explosives, textiles, drugs and pharmaceuticals.

Long-term or chronic exposure to phenol leads to systemic problems like vertigo, digestive difficulties, skin eruptions, nervous problems and headaches, as well as liver or kidney damage.

Given this, it is therefore important that in the affected industries, phenol levels be monitored on a regular basis to ensure worker health and safety.
