What is a Coal Board Medical?
A Qld Coal Board Medical, or a Coal Mine Workers’ Health Assessment, is a mandatory health examination for all coal mine workers employed in Queensland. This assessment is an integral part of the Coal Mine Workers’ Health Scheme, which is regulated by the Queensland Government’s Department of Natural Resources, Mining and Energy.
What is involved in a Coal Board Medical?
A standard Coal Board Medical comprises several components to comprehensively evaluate coal mine workers’ overall health and fitness. These components include:
- Vision Test
- Spirometry Test
- Respiratory Questionnaire
- Urinalysis
- Hearing Test
- Auditory Canal Examination
- Cardiovascular System Examination
- Musculoskeletal System Examination
- Abdomen Examination
- Skin Examination
- Medical History Questionnaire
- ILO Chest X-ray
Process and Requirements for Employers and Employees
Both employers and employees have specific responsibilities to fulfil to ensure the smooth and timely completion of the Coal Board Medical.
Employer Responsibilities
- Register on the ResHealth portal, using QGov with 100-point identification, and set up a profile.
- Keep the employer profile and Appointed Medical Advisors (AMA) up to date on the ResHealth portal.
- Initiate a Health Assessment (HA) for new or existing workers and complete the necessary employer information via the online portal (Section 1) before the health assessment can be completed.
- Receive a Health Assessment number (HA#) from the portal, which is required to book a health assessment appointment with an accredited medical centre.
- Inform workers about the requirement to complete the worker information/Health Assessment Questionnaire (Section 2) on the ResHealth portal before attending the health assessment.
- Download Section 4 (the fitness summary report) from the ResHealth portal once the health assessment is completed.
Employee Responsibilities
- Register on the ResHealth portal, using QGov with 100-point identification, and set up a profile.
- Complete the worker information/Health Assessment Questionnaire (Section 2) on the ResHealth portal before attending the health assessment.
- Note that self-employed workers can initiate a health assessment by registering as both an employer and a worker on the ResHealth portal.
