Why the Name Changed: OGUK to OEUK

If you’ve worked offshore for a while, you’ll know this assessment as the “OGUK medical.” That name still gets used informally, but it’s now technically out of date. In 2022, the industry body Oil & Gas UK (OGUK) rebranded as Offshore Energies UK (OEUK), reflecting the fact that offshore work now spans far more than oil and gas. Offshore wind and other renewable energy projects fall under the same banner. The medical standard was renamed alongside the organisation: the OGUK medical became the OEUK medical. The assessment itself, the requirements it covers, and its acceptance across the industry haven’t changed, only the name has. Certificates issued under the old OGUK name remain valid until their original expiry date, so there’s no need to rush out and replace one early. You may also see the term written as “OEUK medicals” or occasionally still see it referred to by its older name in job ads, site inductions, or contractor paperwork. What’s Assessed in an OEUK Medical

Physical Examination

Height, weight and BMI: Offshore travel and safety equipment (helicopter seating, lifejackets, survival suits) have weight thresholds, so this is checked carefully
Blood pressure and pulse: Uncontrolled high blood pressure is one of the more common reasons a worker doesn’t pass first time
Cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal and neurological review confirms you can manage the physical demands of offshore duties

Sensory and Functional Checks

Vision testing: Assessed both corrected and uncorrected, since clear vision matters for safety-critical tasks and emergency response
Hearing assessment: Checked against offshore noise exposure standards, particularly relevant given the high-noise environment on most installations

Additional Tests (Where Indicated)

Urinalysis: Typically used to screen for diabetes and kidney function
ECG: Performed where clinically indicated, often based on age, cardiovascular risk factors, or medical history
Spirometry (lung function): May be included if there’s a relevant respiratory history

Certificate Validity and Where It’s Accepted

A standard offshore medical certificate is valid for up to two years from the date of examination. Some certificates are issued with a shorter validity period, this happens when the examining doctor identifies a condition that needs closer monitoring, such as a borderline weight or blood pressure result. There’s no grace period on expiry. An offshore medical certificate that has lapsed can’t be used to board an installation, regardless of how recently it expired. It helps to book your renewal a few weeks ahead rather than waiting until the last minute. The OEUK medical certificate is widely recognised well beyond the UK sector. It’s accepted across the North Sea (UK and Norwegian sectors), and is commonly recognised, or required outright, by offshore oil, gas, and renewables operators internationally, including in the Middle East, parts of Asia, and Africa.
