    Mask Fit Testing

A respirator only protects workers when it fits correctly.

Mask fit testing verifies that a respirator forms an effective seal against the wearer’s face, ensuring protection from hazardous airborne contaminants such as silica dust, asbestos fibres, welding fumes, chemicals, and infectious particles.

Safework Health provides professional mask fit testing across Australia, helping organisations meet their obligations under AS/NZS 1715:2009 while protecting the health and safety of their workforce.

    Quantitative PortaCount® Fit Testing

Safework Health currently provides quantitative fit testing using PortaCount® technology for the following respirators:

    • 3M 7500 Series Half Face Respirator (Reusable)
    • 3M Aura 9322A+ Disposable P2 Respirator

PortaCount® testing provides an objective measurement of respirator fit by comparing particle concentrations inside and outside the respirator, producing a documented fit factor result.

Our team can advise on respirator selection and suitability prior to testing.

    What Is Mask Fit Testing?

Mask fit testing is a structured assessment used to determine whether a tight-fitting respirator creates an adequate seal on an individual’s face.

No two faces are the same. A respirator that fits one worker correctly may not provide adequate protection for another. Fit testing ensures the selected respirator delivers the level of protection it was designed to provide.

Why Is Mask Fit Testing Required?

Under AS/NZS 1715:2009, employers are responsible for ensuring respiratory protective equipment is properly selected, fitted, used, and maintained.

    Fit testing should be conducted:

    • Before a respirator is used for the first time
    • When a different respirator model or size is introduced
    • Following significant changes to facial structure
    • As part of an ongoing respiratory protection program

Fit testing is a key component of a compliant respiratory protection program and helps verify that workers receive the protection intended by the respirator manufacturer.

How Often Is Fit Testing Required?

    Fit testing should be repeated:

    • Annually as part of an ongoing respiratory protection program
    • Following significant weight changes
    • After facial surgery or dental work that may affect respirator fit
    • When changing respirator model, size, or style

Workers must be clean-shaven where the respirator seals against the face to achieve an effective fit.
